Scuba diving is an active and an equipment centered sport. The right equipment not only provides you with an enjoyable diving experience, but it ensures the safety of the divers. To many options make it difficult for you, the buyer to find the best equipment for the right price. As a beginner and you’re looking to get into the sport, we suggest you follow some of these tips:
Wear a Wetsuit
When diving, water robs your body of heat faster than air would when on land. Wearing a wet suit when diving, or even during a swim, can help insulate you from heat loss. There are a few things to look for when purchasing a wetsuit. Typically, wetsuits have a thickness rating; the thicker the wetsuit, the more insulation it tends to provide. As far as manufacturers are concerned, they tend to provide the thickness of the wet suit with 2 numbers that is separated by a slash. The first stands for thickness in the torso areas the second in the region of the extremities. For optimal insulation, divers often base the extent of their decision of which suit needs to be worn by determining the temperature of the water.
Always Dive with a Buddy
If you have a buddy, you love to dive a lot, then you’re in luck! You and your friend should be in the water all the more often. If you don’t have a dive buddy then go out and find one right away! A dive buddy can help keep you safe and ensure that nothing bad happens to you under the water. If something were to go wrong, your buddy can help provide you with air and help you ascend to the surface without getting nitrogen poisoning – this is a serious issue and should be avoided at all costs! Make sure you find a buddy and build up trust with them. Your life could be in their hands.
Carry a Backup Light
This might seem trivial, but no one should go dive with only a single light. The brightness along with magnitude are important factors when selecting a light. These will, of course, vary depending on how often you dive, where you plan on diving, and the diver involved. While the backup light does not need to be of the same quality or intensity as your primary light (dive lights can be expensive!) it needs to be reliable. Remember – this is the light which could save your live! Avoid the misconception that bigger and brighter is the best. The whole point of having a light is to get you into dark places where the sun cannot shine. You’ll want to make sure you don’t disturb the creatures that take refuge in these parts.
Try to Relax
One of the golden rules of scuba diving is slow, even, deep breathing. At no point you should hold your breath and you will end up using a lot of air. If you are a nervous person, you’ll need to work extra hard to calm down, conserve air, and enjoy the experience. The less air you use, the longer you can stay under the water!
Bring the Right Dive Weights
There is nothing worse than diving with the improper dive weight. If you put on too much weight you will struggle to get to the surface causing you to burn more air and limiting your dive time. Not enough weight is just as bad as you won’t be able to stay at depth without exerting a lot of effort. Always perform a buoyancy check before you go out to ensure you have the amount of weight needed for the desired target depth.
Know Your Limits
It has been scientifically proven that an hour of scuba diving can be a great workout and can burn 500 calories. It’s a perfect replacement for the gym Ideally you can go on to substitute a session of gym with scuba diving and it will not only fine tone your body, but also your mind. However, you need to remember that scuba diving is a rigorous physical sport and it does require the diver to be in shape.
Remember the Sunblock
When spending a lot of time underwater or swimming, you always need to remember sunblock. As a diver it is not only important for you to protect yourself but also the water that you take a plunge.
Deydration is a serious problem when diving for an extended period of time. Remember – you’re exerting your self to dive to all the fun places and you’re sweating but you can’t tell because your surrounded by water. You need to remember to drink lots of water before and after. It’s even suggested that you consume a drink with loads of electrolytes and salts (think Gatorade or Powerade) to help rehydrate your faster. Coconut water is a great drink as well!
